Low Temperatures

Martensitic alloys are often reheat at low temperatures to attain a hardening phase, and then cooled in air or oil to finish the quenching process. During this process, the core microstructure changes to a martensite matrix. A similar structure can be found in 15 mm diameter specimens.

When compared to other stainless steels, martensitic stainless steels are more resistant to corrosion and have a better toughness. Because of its high toughness, this grade is commonly used for components that are subject to high impact.

Two Main Forms
